Well it was a hive of activity for two full days in Carrigtwohill’s all weather astro turf facility for our U14 hurlers and footballers from the East, City, North and West Cork. On Monday morning at 10.30 am it was the footballers who took to the astro turf with teams of 11/12 aside, playing 15 min games with roll on roll off substitutions ongoing. Each team got to play 3 games against the other divisions and all players got equal playing time on the field. The GDA’s Shane Supple, Pat Spratt, Sean Crowley, Paudie O Brien, Colm Crowley, Kevin O’Callaghan along with mentors and referee Canice Walsh in the middle of the pitch keeping a watchful eye on the lads it all ran to plan. With many pitches unavailable for this long blitz day because of the inclement weather it was great to be able to give the lads a run out against the other divisions from around the county and at the same time give the Squad mentors a chance to see the lads in action. Well done to all who took part
On Wednesday it was the turn of the Hurlers to take to the astro turf and once again from 10.30 am till 4 pm it was not stop hurling. Based on the same principle as the Football blitz each team got to play 3 matches against other teams from different divisions and the teams were all balanced at 11/12 aside with roll on roll of substitutions. Because we were in a small space it was decided to keep the scores to goals only and allow the players a chance to develop passing movements and team play. With non stop action lads got a 15 min break out of every hour to relax and watch the opposition in action and overall it was a great day of hurling with first touch skills to the fore. We must mention referees Canice and Dillon who did a fantastic job on the day allowing play to flow and keeping an eye on the lads during game time. Once again it gave the GDA’s Sean Crowley, Colm Crowley, Noel Crowley, Shane Supple, Kevin O’Callaghan and mentors a great chance to watch the lads playing hurling in a tight space against players of equal standing. All in all the players enjoyed the 2 days of non stop sport.
A big well done to all and a big thank you to all players, parents, mentors, coaches and the GDA’s who made this possible.
