Tuesday 20th September saw Midleton CBS Post Primary school hold their second blitz of two, orgainsed for 6th class pupils from the surrounding Primary schools. This week saw Midleton CBS hold 6th Class Hurling Tournament. After the successful football tournament which was also open to primary schools in the East Cork area, it was great to see the young players take to the field for hurling.
On the day the 4th year students of Midleton CBS who are currently taking part in the Munster GAA Transition Course as part of the Munster GAA Coach Education Program run in the school by East Cork GDA Shane Supple, acted as referees, umpires and linesmen under the watchful eyes of teachers Peter Dowling and Shane Martin who were running these tournaments on behalf of Midleton CBS.
It was great to see so many young players availing of this excellent opportunity to wear the school jersey and play hurling for their school and to get a chance to avail of the fantastic facilities in Midleton CBS.
It was great to see the facilities being utilised on the day with the pitch in immaculate condition and the large sports hall being used as a dressing room/meeting point/rest area for all the schools that took part. Outside on the newly refurbished pitch, which was a hive of activity two pitches were lined out side by side to allow 4 teams play at any given time.
It was great to see pupils from local schools Gael Scoil Midleton, Kilcredan, Midleton CBS Aghada and Dungourney National Schools taking part. The blitz was run as seven aside games with each game lasting 15 minutes each team got 4 games. The winners received medals on the day and each team were treated to snacks & refreshments which were handed out at the end of the blitz to all players.
All in all it was great to see the young players on the pitch taking part in our national sport. Because of the success and demand for it Midleton CBS are planning on running both hurling and football tournaments again next year. Well done to all the schools who took part in this successful event and to Midleton CBS Principal Pat Hurley and all his staff for organising this tournament now in its 3rd year we say a big thank you. It looks set to be an annual event that primary schools can look forward to.
