This years Cork Primary School Skills Finals in both Hurling and Football took place in Nemo Rangers on Thursday 26th May starting at 11am.
Hurling Skills Finals
There were no regional finals in the hurling and the football regionals were held earlier on in the year, and all schools were welcome to send in a team of 3 boys to represent their school. The Top 5 teams in the hurling qualifying groups held in the morning, then proceeded to the finals at 1.30pm.
Each team of 3 boys had to complete the following skills with points added for each skill successfully completed. Solo with ball on hurley between poles, Long puck, Passing skills, Sideline cuts, Striking from the hand over the crossbar. The Winners of the 2016 Cork Primary School Hurlings Skills finals were Carrig na bhFearr NS. With Ballygiblin NS in second place and Farren BNS taking third place.
Well done to all schools who took part Carrig na bhFearr NS will now go on to represent Cork in the Munster section for the Hurling Skills Finals in Mallow on Wed 8th June 2016 . Schools competing today were Carrig na bhFearr NS, Cobh NS, Killavullen NS, Beaumont BNS, Glenville NS, Bellgooley NS, Newchestown NS, Shandrum NS and Buttavent NS. It was great to see them doing so well.
Footbal Skills Final
The Top 6 teams from the football qualifying groups then proceeded to their finals at at 2pm with Buttavent NS coming out top in their section and they will go on to represent Cork in the Munster Finals on Wed 8th June.
The other schools who took part in the football finals were Carrigaline NS, Ballyvourney NS, Bishop Murphy NS, Newcestown NS, Beaumont NS and the over all winners Buttavent NS. They too had a set of skills to complete from solo with ball, hand passing, kicking and scoring with hand pass over cross bar. Well done to all schools who took part.
A big well done must go to Colm Crowley GDA who organised this years Skills competition along with the help of all the GDA’s from the different areas, Nemo Rangers for providing us with fantastic facilities today and earlier on in the year when all pitches were closed they provided us with the use of their astroturf pitches, to all schools who took part, the pupils who took part and to all parents who were there to support the players and who provided transport to and from the competitions.
